FAQs

Do Indians need a visa for Tanzania?

Yes. Indian passport holders can apply for an e-visa online in advance (recommended, roughly $50, 5–10 business days) or get a visa on arrival at Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, or Zanzibar airports, though the e-visa avoids potential queues. If your trip includes Zanzibar specifically, note that the islands now require proof of mandatory travel insurance purchased through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation before you land — this is separate from your Tanzania visa and from any personal travel insurance you already carry.

How much does a Tanzania trip cost from India?

A 10-to-12-day trip combining a mainland safari with a Zanzibar beach extension typically runs from around ₹2,00,000 per person for a mid-range itinerary to ₹4,00,000 or more per person for a comfortable one, with luxury lodges and fly-in safaris pushing costs considerably higher. A standalone 7-night Zanzibar-only trip is considerably cheaper, starting around ₹1,00,000 per person for a budget itinerary.

How many days do you need in Tanzania?

Ten to twelve days lets you properly combine a northern-circuit safari (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire) with several nights on Zanzibar without rushing either. Five to six days works for a safari-only or Zanzibar-only trip.

Is Kenya safe to visit?

Yes — Kenya's main safari circuit and tourist areas (the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Nairobi National Park, and Diani Beach) are well-secured and see millions of incident-free visits, with government advisories rating the country similarly to other established safari destinations. The real risk areas are geographically specific and well away from any standard itinerary: the counties bordering Somalia (Mandera, Wajir, Garissa) carry a do-not-travel warning due to cross-border terrorism and banditry, and within Nairobi, advisories flag the Eastleigh and Kibera neighborhoods rather than the city generally. Periodic political demonstrations in Nairobi are also worth checking for before you travel, as gatherings can escalate with little warning.

Is Tanzania safe to visit?

Yes — Tanzania is generally considered one of East Africa's more stable destinations, rated at a similar advisory level to South Africa and Kenya, with the Northern Safari Circuit and Zanzibar recording no significant security incidents affecting tourists through early 2026. The practical risks worth planning around are health-related rather than crime-related: malaria is present across most of the country below 1,800 meters, including Zanzibar, so prophylaxis and mosquito precautions matter regardless of your itinerary. Petty theft can occur in crowded markets and cities, and Zanzibar's conservative, largely Muslim culture calls for modest dress and avoiding public displays of affection.

When is the best time to see the Great Migration's Mara River crossing?

August and September offer the highest concentration of herds and the most frequent crossings, though the window runs roughly July through October depending on rainfall that year. The crossings can be viewed from Tanzania's northern Serengeti (the Kogatende and Lamai areas) as well as from Kenya's Masai Mara on the other side of the river. Camps in the northern Serengeti book out during peak weeks a year or more in advance, so this is one safari to plan early rather than close to travel dates.
