FAQs

Do Indians need a visa for Finland?

Yes. Finland is a full Schengen member, so Indian passport holders need a standard Schengen Type C visa — there's no e-visa or visa-on-arrival option, and this doesn't change under the ETIAS system rolling out for visa-exempt travelers, which doesn't apply to Indians. Processing through VFS Global typically takes around 15 working days, and you'll need travel insurance covering at least €30,000. As of 2026, first-time entrants also have their fingerprints and photo taken under the EU's new Entry/Exit System at the border.

How much does a Finland trip cost from India?

A 7-day trip typically runs from around ₹1,20,000 per person for a mid-range itinerary to ₹2,00,000 or more per person including a couple of Lapland activities. A glass igloo stay or a Christmas-week trip pushes costs meaningfully higher, often ₹2,50,000–₹4,50,000 or more per person.

How many days do you need in Finland?

Seven days works well for a Helsinki-plus-Lapland combination. If the Northern Lights are the priority, plan at least 4–5 nights specifically in Lapland, since cloud cover, not aurora activity, is what most often ruins a shorter trip.

Is Finland safe to visit?

Yes — Finland is consistently rated among the safest countries in the world, with very low violent crime. The practical risks worth planning around are winter driving conditions, moose and reindeer on rural roads, and simply being prepared for extreme cold rather than any crime-related concern.

Is 2026 a particularly good year to see the Northern Lights in Finland?

Yes. The current 11-year solar cycle peaked around 2024–2025 and remains well above its long-term average heading into 2026, meaning brighter and more frequent aurora displays than most of the years since 2011. Late September through October and February through March are statistically the strongest windows within the season, thanks to the equinox effect.
